What Fashions of 1934 Is About
A Warner picture directed by William Dieterle with the musical numbers staged by Busby Berkeley. When his Manhattan investment firm collapses, Sherwood Nash goes into business with his partner Snap and the designer Lynn Mason, copying Paris couture and selling it cheap to discount shops. All three leads have questionable ethics and the film is entirely comfortable with that, which places it in the short window when pictures walked right along the edge of the Production Code. The working partnership between William Powell's swindler and Bette Davis's designer is more fun than the romance. The songs are by Sammy Fain and Irving Kahal, and Berkeley's ostrich plume sequence is what the film is still remembered for.
