What The Last Flight Is About
Four friends who flew in the First World War go to Paris when it ends instead of going home. They do not know how to live with what they have seen and make no plan beyond drinking. There they meet Nikki, a wealthy and strange young woman who lives by rules of her own. The five of them, trailed by a coarse reporter, drink their way from Paris to Lisbon. The film tells the emptiness of the post war generation not as drama but as a scattered lightness; the loss stands here without ever being named. Richard Barthelmess and Helen Chandler appear in William Dieterle’s seventy six minute American film, completed in 1931.
