Brenda Myers-Powell What Dreamcatcher Is About
The documentary follows the days of Brenda Myers-Powell in Chicago. She is out at all hours reaching women working the street and girls at risk; she goes into schools, runs group sessions in prisons, hands out condoms and a phone number from her car. What makes this possible is her own past: she was on the street very young, lived through years of violence and managed to get out, and in what she says there is neither self pity nor judgement of anyone else. Kim Longinotto’s hundred and four minute documentary does not tell a rescue story but shows daily and exhausting work. It was completed in 2015 and won the directing award in the world cinema documentary section at Sundance that year.
