Durian Durian

Yan is a young woman who has come to Hong Kong from northern China on a three-month visa. For that time she works as a sex worker and saves her money. She becomes friends with Fan, a small girl washing dishes on the same street. When the visa runs out, Yan goes home to her family and her former fiancé. The second half of the film takes place there. Fruit Chan's Hong Kong film never turns the work into spectacle; the camera stays on Yan's face and on her daily routine. The real subject is not earning the money but what to do once it is earned. Qin Hailu was named best actress at the Golden Horse Awards for the part and the film took best feature there as well. It competed at Venice.
