What Little Cheung Is About
It is 1997, just before Hong Kong is handed back to China. Nine year old Cheung works in his family’s restaurant in Mongkok, in a street full of prostitutes, gangsters, coffin makers and people who came illegally from the mainland. He meets Fan, a girl who arrived that way herself, and the two of them set off to look for Cheung’s missing older brother. This is the last part of Fruit Chan’s unofficial trilogy about the temper of Hong Kong before and after the handover, following Made in Hong Kong and The Longest Summer. What separates it from the other two is tone: the raw, abrasive edge of the earlier films gives way to something softer and more openly humanist.
