What Made in Hong Kong Is About
After his father walks out, Autumn Moon quits school and collects debts for the triads. Going door to door he falls for Ping, whose kidneys have failed and whose family cannot pay for treatment. To find the money he takes a killing job. Fruit Chan shot the film on leftover stock from other productions, with a crew of a handful and young people who had never acted. It came out in 1997, the year Hong Kong was handed to China, and it is about a generation that feels its future has already closed. Suicide and death sit at the centre of it.
