What Hollywood Hong Kong Is About
A poor neighbourhood in Hong Kong waiting to be pulled down. A man who runs a barbecue pork restaurant lives there with his two sons. A young woman named Tong Tong comes into the lives of those three and of a man from a local gang; every one of them hopes for something from her and every one of them loses something. Fruit Chan's film is about a neighbourhood and about that neighbourhood disappearing. Zhou Xun plays Tong Tong. The telling stands between black comedy and cruelty; nobody is innocent and nobody is entirely guilty either. The film makes the way the men look at the woman a subject in itself, and does not endorse that look. It is one of Chan's works watching the transformation of Hong Kong from the edge.
