Tanuja Chandra’s 1998 Hindi film is a remake of the 1996 picture Eye for an Eye. Kajol plays both twins: one is raped and murdered, the other sets out to identify the man who did it. He is caught and then released for lack of evidence, at which point he starts on the rest of the family. Naina decides to settle it herself, with the help of Suraj Singh, a former army officer. The film is less interested in staging violence than in asking what is left when the law simply stops working, which is also where its considerable anger comes from. Ashutosh Rana made his name as the killer; Mahesh Bhatt wrote it and Pooja Bhatt produced.
