What Earth Is About
A village in Ukraine. An old man dies under an apple tree; the death is shown not as a catastrophe but as part of nature. A tractor arrives. Young Vasyl drives it and argues for working the land collectively; the landowning kulaks are against it. One night Vasyl is killed on the road. Oleksandr Dovzhenko writes and directs. The telling is rhythm rather than event. The scenes build a cycle rather than a story: birth, harvest, death and beginning again. Faces, wheat fields and sky are held at length. It was produced to argue for Soviet collectivisation and did not turn out that way. Soviet critics found it too mystical, too peasant and politically unclear; it was cut shortly after release and Dovzhenko was attacked. What it is known for now is the image. The compositions, the scale between people and nature, and the montage count among the most cited in silent cinema. The narrative records the Ukrainian countryside directly and the film was shot just before the famine of those same years, a context that changes how it reads today. It was made silent and music was added later in various versions. Who it is for: anyone interested in silent classics and the Soviet montage school. Who it is not for: there is almost no plot, the narrative is deliberately slow, and some passages stay closed without the political context.
