What Eijanaika Is About
The film reconstructs the carnival mood that spread through Japan in 1867 and 1868, in the days running up to the Meiji Restoration, summed up in the cry ee ja nai ka, roughly why not. It follows what the political and social upheaval did to ordinary people and builds to a riotous march on the imperial palace in Tokyo that turns into a massacre. Characteristically, Shohei Imamura looks not at the people running the country but at the lower classes and the people on its margins. The hundred and fifty-one minute film opened in Japan on 14 March 1981 and played at Cannes the same year. Shigeru Izumiya, Kaori Momoi and Ken Ogata are in the cast.
