Elia Kazan: A Director's Journey

The documentary is about the life and the work of Elia Kazan. Kazan worked on Broadway and in cinema alike. He left a lasting mark on both cinema and theatre. East of Eden is among his films. A Streetcar Named Desire, On the Waterfront and Gentleman’s Agreement are recalled as well. The documentary shows scenes from those productions. Interviews with actors and collaborators come in between. The life of Kazan outside the set is also taken up. In the nineteen fifties he appeared before the House Un-American Activities Committee. What he said there was argued over for many years. The film does not skip that chapter. Kazan himself sits in front of the camera. The account holds his work and his choices together. Elia Kazan and Eli Wallach speak in the seventy five minute documentary. It is an American production Richard Schickel finished in 1995.
