What Encore, Once More Encore! Is About
Pyotr Todorovsky’s 1992 film is set in a remote garrison town at the end of the 1940s and the start of the 1950s. Life proceeds at its measured rate: the officers drink and carry on, the conscripts serve. The married colonel Vinogradov is in love with Lyuba, a doctor, who is in love with Lieutenant Poletayev, and every feeling that surfaces is smothered by the atmosphere of cruelty and hypocrisy around it. Todorovsky handles the period with neither nostalgia nor rage; he simply shows how impossible it was to be a person inside that closed world. Valentin Gaft, Irina Rozanova, Yevgeni Mironov and Yelena Yakovleva are in it. It won the Nika and the main prize at Kinotavr.
