Years after the war, a front line officer, now married and content, comes across a woman selling goods in the street and recognises her: during the war she was the commander’s companion and the young officer had loved her from a distance. The encounter wakes in him feelings of gratitude and tenderness he had long kept down. He learns that she is now alone, living with a small daughter whose father was killed at the front. The more he tries to help her, the more he strains both his own marriage and the woman’s dignity, and it becomes clear that doing good is not a simple thing.
