What Eric Clapton: Life in 12 Bars Is About
The documentary starts with Clapton's childhood: his mother left him after he was born, he was raised by his grandmother and grandfather, and for a long time he took them for his parents. Then the guitar comes, the blues comes, and in the sixties one band after another. After that come the years of addiction, Pattie Boyd, a long stretch of drinking, and the death of his son Conor. Nobody speaks to camera in Lili Fini Zanuck's film. For a hundred and thirty-five minutes there is only archive footage, photographs, letters and sound; the telling runs on Clapton's own voice. The method makes the film close, and it also sets its limit: what is told is the version of events as Clapton tells them. The music carries the chronology, and which event each song was written after is seen in order.
