Fatin Abdel Wahab's 1960 Egyptian film follows Hussein, a shy young man. He loves Samiha but cannot say so, and she is interested in her singing cousin. Samiha's father intervenes and spreads the rumour that Hussein is involved with a famous actress. The comedy comes from the lie getting out of hand. The rumour circulates through the neighbourhood, everyone adds something to it, and Hussein has to confirm a story told about him. Omar Sharif leads, in a typical example of the classical period of Egyptian cinema. It is one of Soad Hosny's early films. The narrative is close to stage comedy and the pace is built through dialogue. Who it's for: those who like classic Egyptian comedy. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a modern narrative rhythm; the film carries the stage tempo of its period.
