Everyman

The documentary takes up the Netherlands and the Dutch. Bert Haanstra draws a portrait of a country. Part of the method is a hidden camera. The camera watches people in very different situations. Filming is done on the street, at work and at home. The film shows the unusual inside the usual. It does the same thing the other way round. It finds the usual inside the unusual. The time is the years when postwar reconstruction was ending. Those hard years are now behind. For most people life is better than before. The account takes place inside that easing. Simon Carmiggelt and Peter Ustinov appear in Bert Haanstra’s Dutch documentary of 1963, which runs ninety minutes.
