What Extreme Private Eros: Love Song 1974 Is About
When his wife Miyuki Takeda told him she was leaving in order to find herself, the director Kazuo Hara began making this documentary. His aim was both to keep a tie to the woman he still cared about and to make sense of the complicated relation between them. The camera enters her life at times uncomfortably closely; while looking for her own way she becomes pregnant and raises her child on her own. The most disputed part of the film is that very closeness: the person recording is a party to the story being told. The documentary does not close that question; it leaves to the viewer when the camera is a witness and when it is a pressure. The account gives neither the woman nor the director any peace. Kazuo Hara’s ninety eight minute Japanese documentary was completed in 1974.
