What Far Away Is About

Serge is a long distance lorry driver working between Morocco and Europe. In Tangier he tries to put things right with Sarah, who used to be his girlfriend. Since her mother’s death she has refused to see him, and she is thinking of joining her brother in Canada. Serge asks for help from Saïd, a young man who looks out for Sarah. In return he promises to carry Saïd across to Europe in his lorry. At that point what all three of them want gets knotted together. The film shows from three separate angles what it means to stand on either side of a border. Stéphane Rideau, Lubna Azabal and Mohamed Hamaidi appear in André Téchiné’s hundred and twenty minute film, a joint French and Spanish production, completed in 2001.
