Thieves

In the middle of the night Ivan's body is brought home, to his wife and his young son at the door. From there the film goes backwards and tells the same events through different people. Ivan's brother Alex is a policeman. Juliette and Jimmy are siblings and Ivan's partners in a shabby nightclub. And there is Marie, who teaches philosophy. The bond between Alex, Juliette and Marie is rebuilt around Ivan's death. André Téchiné directs, with Catherine Deneuve and Daniel Auteuil in the leads. He refuses to trust the story to a single point of view; each section gives what one person knows, and none of them knows the whole of it. Out of the shape of a crime film comes a story about family and belonging.
