What Fidel: The Untold Story Is About
Estela Bravo’s documentary covers Fidel Castro and forty years of the Cuban revolution, and it holds footage that exists nowhere else: Castro swimming with a bodyguard, walking through his childhood home and school, joking with his friend Nelson Mandela, meeting the boy Elián González, marking his birthday with the Buena Vista Social Club. One thing should be said plainly at the start, though: the film presents Castro in an entirely favourable light, gives no room to his opponents, and makes no claim to neutrality. That is where the criticism has concentrated. Bravo showed it at Toronto in 2001 and it won an award at Urbanworld in New York.
