Michaela DePrince What First Position Is About
Bess Kargman's 2011 documentary follows six young dancers preparing for the Youth America Grand Prix, one of the world's most prestigious ballet competitions. Aged between eleven and seventeen, they come from different countries: a boy from Colombia seeking a scholarship, a girl adopted after losing her family to war in Sierra Leone, two home-schooled siblings. The documentary is honest about what ballet training does to bodies: bleeding feet, injuries, and the expectations loaded onto ten-year-olds. But it does not criticise this, presenting it as a reality, and finally turns toward competition results and the shape of a sports documentary. The question of parental pressure is left where it is opened. Who it's for: viewers interested in ballet and the performing arts who enjoy competition documentaries. Who it's not for: anyone troubled by children exposed to high-performance pressure, or wanting a critical frame.
