Footsteps in the Fog

Victorian London. Stephen Lowry's wife has just died and everyone is offering him their sympathy. But Lily, the maid in the house, knows something: he poisoned her. Lily does not use it to go to the police but to change her own position. She blackmails her employer and asks to be made mistress of the house. Lowry is cornered, and starts looking for a way to be rid of Lily instead. His plan lands on the wrong person. Arthur Lubin directs, with Stewart Granger as Lowry and Jean Simmons as Lily; the two were married in real life at the time. It belongs to the British noir line: fog in the streets, a measured tension, and a game of chess between two people.
