What Ride 'Em Cowboy Is About
Two men selling peanuts at a rodeo get into trouble with their boss, run for it and jump a train heading west. Where they end up they find themselves hired as cowboys on a ranch. They know nothing about riding, nothing about cattle, nothing about anything really. They stay all the same. Bud Abbott and Lou Costello take the leads in Arthur Lubin's comedy. The film belongs to the pair's early years at Universal and the pattern is familiar: a misunderstanding, a chase, a stage number. Ella Fitzgerald sings in it; it was among her first appearances on screen. The western elements are used entirely as material for jokes.
