Amanda Lipitz's 2021 documentary follows three American teenage girls, each adopted from China, who discover through a genetic testing site that they are cousins. All three want to find their birth families and travel to China. The documentary's most valuable element is what the local researcher working on the search describes: why families had to give up children during the one-child policy, and that most of those records were never kept. The film promises no easy reunion and the outcome stays largely uncertain. The relationship among the three girls is its emotional centre. The steering is heavy in places. Who it's for: viewers interested in documentaries about adoption and identity. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a definite outcome, or put off by emotional steering.
