The Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women was founded in 2009 with the aim of sending every one of its students to college. The documentary follows that school’s first graduating class through the final year of its step team: the effort to be the first in their families to reach college, months spent chasing scholarships, and the solidarity built in the practice room. The city is shaken by the death of Freddie Gray during the year of filming, and the tension outside comes into the room with them. Amanda Lipitz’s first feature won a prize at Sundance in 2017. Rather than making the dancing into a fable of escape, it shows what working together is actually for.
