Frankenstein: The Anatomy Lesson

This 2025 documentary describes how Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of Frankenstein was made. Across forty-five minutes the director speaks alongside cast members including Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth and Christoph Waltz, together with the cinematographer, production designer, costume designer and creature designer. The through-line is that del Toro carried this project for years and why he insisted on practical effects, real sets and a creature built through make-up. Behind-the-scenes footage, costume tests and make-up sessions take up a large part of it. The documentary sits plainly on the film's side and keeps no critical distance; its purpose is to describe the production. It was released on Netflix. Who it's for: viewers curious about how del Toro works and about practical effects craft. Who it's not for: anyone who has not seen the film, or who wants an independent assessment; the documentary speaks from inside the production.
