What Frazetta: Painting with Fire Is About
The documentary tells the life of Frank Frazetta, the painter who rebuilt science fiction and fantasy art, known above all for his Conan covers and for the muscled heroes and dark grounds that shaped everything the genre painted afterwards. Lance Laspina follows the road from a Brooklyn childhood to a cult figure, talking to Frazetta’s family and to people including Forrest J Ackerman, Kevin Eastman, Ralph Bakshi and John Milius. The most affecting thing in it comes late: after a series of strokes left his right arm almost useless, Frazetta taught himself at seventy-five to draw and paint with his left hand. The film declines to turn that into a tale of heroism and presents it as what continuing to work actually looks like.
