In 1970 Angela Davis, a young philosophy lecturer at UCLA, had been dismissed from the university over her political views. That same year there was an armed action in a courtroom in which four people died. Some of the guns used were registered in Davis's name. A warrant was issued, she fled, and she was arrested two months later. Shola Lynch's documentary tells the trial and the campaign that grew around it worldwide through archive footage. Davis speaks in it herself. The outcome is on the record: in 1972 a jury acquitted her of all charges. The film does not turn this into a story of triumph; it shows both the racial and political climate of the time and the way the case was conducted.
