What Free Country Is About
East Germany, 1992. Two teenage girls disappear in a remote corner of the country and the investigation goes to two policemen who could hardly be less alike. The question of whether the girls ran away or whether something far worse happened turns, as it goes on, into a question about the town itself. The most important thing about the film is what neither summary says: it is a remake of the Spanish film Marshland. The original was set in Spain after Franco; here the same setup is moved to Germany after reunification, with the people of a collapsed regime still around.
