Jersey

Arjun is thirty-six and a former cricketer. He stopped playing ten years ago and has held down no job since. His wife supports the family and the strain between them is growing. For his birthday their small son asks for one thing: the shirt of the Indian national team. Arjun cannot tell him he does not have the money. He decides to play again, at that age and in those circumstances, in a game where getting into a team is considered impossible. Gowtam Tinnanuri's film is the Hindi remake of his own 2019 Telugu film Jersey. The narrative uses the shapes of the sports film, but its real subject is not the game; it is how failure makes a man invisible at home. Shahid Kapoor plays Arjun, Mrunal Thakur his wife, and Pankaj Kapur his old coach. Who it's for: Viewers who like Indian sports drama, family-centred narrative, and second-chance stories. Who it's not for: Nothing surprises anyone who has seen the original. It also runs long and the match scenes repeat.
