What Freedom Is About
A Roma family travelling the roads of France during the Second World War, and trailing after them a boy called Claude whose parents left and never came back. When they reach the town where they stop every year for the grape harvest, they run into a new law: nomadism is forbidden. Théodore, the mayor, and Miss Lundi, the schoolteacher, try to protect them. Thousands of Roma were held in camps set up on French soil under Vichy, and the film is about that barely told history. The teacher is drawn from a real person: Yvette Lundy, a schoolmistress deported to a camp for forging papers for Roma and Jewish families. Tony Gatlif shows freedom not as a slogan but as a daily necessity.
