What Exiles Is About

One day Zano puts a mad idea to Naïma: drop everything and go to Algeria. Both of them were born in France; her family came from Algeria and his family had to leave it. They set off. They cross France and Spain, work in the fields for money, and get lost repeatedly. They also meet people travelling the other way. Tony Gatlif won best director at Cannes in 2004 for the film, with Romain Duris as Zano and Lubna Azabal as Naïma. Making it took Gatlif himself back to Algeria after forty-three years. The music is very nearly the narration.
