What Freeway: Crack in the System Is About
Two people sit at the centre of the documentary: Rick Ross, who came off the street to become a major crack dealer in Los Angeles in the eighties, and Gary Webb, the journalist who wrote about the connection between that trade, the Contra rebels in Nicaragua and the CIA. Marc Levin tells how crack pulled inner-city neighbourhoods apart through Ross’s rise and fall. Webb’s 1996 series caused an enormous argument the day it appeared, was attacked hard by the major papers, and his career collapsed with it; the film argues his case, and that case remains contested. Ross, Webb’s source Coral Baca and his wife Susan Webb are among those speaking.
