What Fresh Dressed Is About

The documentary follows where hip hop dress came from. The road starts in the cotton fields of the south, passes through the gangs of the South Bronx in the 1970s, and arrives at the windows of the big brands. It explains why clothing mattered so much: in a neighbourhood with no money, what you wear is the one field where you build yourself. Sacha Jenkins' documentary uses archive footage and interviews together. Among those speaking are Nas, Pharrell Williams, Damon Dash, Daymond John and Karl Kani. The telling does not treat fashion as a shallow subject; it opens up race, class and commercialisation as well. How a culture is first shut out and then bought up runs through the whole film.
