What Sunday Best: The Untold Story of Ed Sullivan Is About
Sacha Jenkins's documentary is about Ed Sullivan, host of the Sunday evening variety show that ran for many years. Sullivan was awkward on stage, yet his programme was among the most watched in the country. The argument is that the show's line-up was a deliberate choice. Black musicians appeared regularly on national television, and this continued despite pressure from sponsors and from southern stations; the narrative also shows what it cost. The archive is wide, and Harry Belafonte, Dionne Warwick and Berry Gordy speak. Sullivan's own writing enters the narrative. Who it's for: those interested in television and music history. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a critical portrait; the documentary affirms its subject.
