Fubar II

Terry and Dean are two long-haired old friends with no plan beyond drinking beer. They head north to the oil patch to make money. What they have not accounted for is how that money is earned, how it gets spent, and what the work does to a person. Safety rules, shift patterns and camp life are all waiting for them. Directed by Michael Dowse, the film is the sequel to the first Fubar from 2002 and uses the same method: a comedy shot like a documentary and built on improvisation. But the sequel is darker than the original; under the laughter there is unemployment, addiction and illness. Nothing else describes the workforce of Canada's oil sands in this register. Nobody is mocked; the two men are left as they are.
