What Fulci for Fake Is About
The first feature length portrait of Lucio Fulci is built on an odd device: Nicola, a successful actor, agrees to prepare for a biographical film in which he will play the director, and the more he prepares the more he is stuck on the question of who the man actually was. Fulci rarely spoke about himself in interviews, carried his life into his films indirectly, and had already rewritten his own biography within his lifetime. Simone Scafidi’s ninety two minute Italian documentary rests on previously unseen material, on the accounts of the director’s two daughters and on people who worked on his sets. Among those speaking are Michele Soavi, Paolo Malco, the composer Fabio Frizzi and the cinematographer Sergio Salvati. It screened in the classics section of the Venice Film Festival in 2019.
