What Full Metal Village Is About
Sung Hyung Cho's 2007 German documentary is set in a village of eighteen hundred people called Wacken in Schleswig-Holstein. The village is ageing, the young are leaving, and the small farms cannot compete with the large agricultural companies. Once a year seventy thousand people arrive there for the biggest metal festival in Europe. The film does not find the meeting of the two worlds funny and does not mock it; it listens to the villagers without cutting them off. The director, born in South Korea and working in Germany, does this in the shape of the classic German homeland film. It won the Max Ophüls prize and the German art-house guild's best documentary award.
