Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana

Raj B Shetty's 2021 Kannada film is about Shiva and Hari, two friends who grew up in Mangaluru and became the terror of the city. They are opposites in temperament, one quiet and calculating, the other always about to detonate. What the film is really about is how that bond comes apart once ego, ambition and jealousy get between them. Shetty both directs and takes a lead role, tying his characters to the mythology of Shiva and Nandi and lifting the story onto a symbolic plane. Despite the small budget the visual language is striking: the temple festival sequences, the use of light, and the dynamic between Rishab Shetty and Raj B Shetty carry the film. Setting a gangster story inside a mythological frame drew unexpected attention in Kannada cinema on release. Who it's for: viewers who like independent Kannada cinema, crime drama about friendships dissolving, and narratives built on mythological reference. Who it's not for: anyone uncomfortable with the density of the violence, or who will feel the symbolic layer weighs the story down.
