Jacek Rozenek What General Nil Is About
The film covers the last years of General August Emil Fieldorf, the legendary Home Army commander known by the codename Nil, who became the organisation’s second in command after the Warsaw Uprising was crushed. Arrested by the NKVD in 1945 and deported deep into the Soviet Union, he returns at the point where the film opens, and it closes in a Polish prison in 1953. Ryszard Bugajski is filming a man who fought the Nazis being tried and hanged by the new regime installed in his own country. Fieldorf was executed at Mokotów Prison in Warsaw on 24 February 1953, and the film’s force lies in how quietly that second betrayal proceeds.
