What Ghosts Is About
Ai Qin takes on a large debt and is smuggled into Britain in order to support her family. There she becomes one of millions of migrant workers; she shares a two bedroom house with eleven others and works in factories preparing food for the supermarkets. The pay is very low, the debt continues and there is no protection of any kind; in the end they go out at night to gather cockles in Morecambe Bay. That work is exhausting and dangerous, because one has to know when the water will come in. The film rests on real events and most of its parts are played by people who are not professional actors. Ai Qin Lin plays the lead in Nick Broomfield’s ninety six minute British film, completed in 2006.
