What The Leader, His Driver, and the Driver's Wife Is About
Nick Broomfield goes to South Africa to interview Eugene Terre’Blanche. Terre’Blanche is the head of a white supremacist organisation called the AWB. The documentary was shot in the last years of apartheid. Getting the interview is not easy; he is kept waiting for months. In that time the camera records other things. Awkward conversations with the organisation’s supporters, and the armed training of its young men. The one who opens doors for Broomfield is the leader’s driver. The driver’s loyalty to the movement gives way over time, and the film follows that too. In the end the interview does take place. This eighty five minute British documentary was completed in 1991.
