What Ghosts of Abu Ghraib Is About
When what American soldiers had done to detainees at Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad in the autumn of 2003 came out, the scandal went round the world. Rory Kennedy’s documentary tells it from both sides: she talks to soldiers who served in the prison and to Iraqi detainees, interviewed in Turkey. The question the film asks is not who the monsters were but how ordinary people came to do this. Kennedy frames it not as individual deviance but as the result of military and political decisions taken in a climate of fear and chaos, of inadequate training and unclear orders. To make the connection she uses footage from the Milgram experiment of the 1960s. An HBO production, it premiered at Sundance in 2007 and won an Emmy.
