Downfall: The Case Against Boeing

Two new Boeing 737 MAX aircraft come down five months apart and three hundred and forty-six people are killed. The company blames the pilots first, then the airlines, then the maintenance crews. The documentary establishes that the pilots were not told the MCAS software existed on the aircraft, and that this was not an accident but a decision about cost. Rory Kennedy builds the film from the families of the dead, reporters at the Wall Street Journal and former engineers at the company. The real subject is not one aircraft model but engineering culture giving way to the share price after the merger with McDonnell Douglas. It went out on Netflix and reopened the argument over Boeing's corporate responsibility. Who it is for: viewers who like documentaries about corporate crime and are interested in aviation. Who it is not for: anyone afraid of flying.
