The White Diamond is Werner Herzog's documentary about English inventor Graham Dorrington's attempt to fly a teardrop shaped helium airship above Guyana's Kaieteur Falls. Twelve years earlier, on a similar expedition, Dorrington's friend, cinematographer Dieter Plage, fell to his death over the same rainforest canopy, and the film also records how Dorrington reckons with that loss and lingering uncertainty about it. Who it's for: anyone drawn to Herzog's documentaries about obsessive inventors and dangerous passions, interwoven here with a personal story of grief. Who it's not for: viewers expecting only a technical documentary about an invention, since the film also carries a deep story of loss and guilt.
