Gimme the Loot

Adam Leon's 2012 American film follows two young graffiti writers in the Bronx planning to hit the hardest target after a rival crew erases their work: the giant apple at the Mets stadium. The problem is money; they need to find it within two days. The film is not a crime story but the story of a couple of days two young people spend moving around New York. Leon films the city from somewhere untouristed, and the naturalness between the two leads carries it. Tashiana Washington's Sofia is particularly well built; what being a girl means in this work is shown without ever being discussed. The narrative is loose and deliberately inconclusive. Who it's for: viewers who like American independent cinema and city stories. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a structured plot, or put off by profanity.
