Gladbeck: The Hostage Crisis, directed by Volker Heise, is a German documentary about a real crisis in August 1988, when two armed bank robbers held Germany hostage for 54 hours with a bus full of captives, ending in three deaths. The documentary is built entirely from raw news footage of the time, with no later interviews, narration, or reenactments, footage that mercilessly exposes how journalistic ethics collapsed as reporters conducted live interviews with the hostages, brought them coffee, and even rode along in the getaway car. In the aftermath, the German Press Council banned interviewing hostages during hostage crises; the event is still remembered as one of the darkest moments in postwar German journalism. Who it's for: anyone curious about a German documentary showing, through unmediated period news footage alone, how journalists got directly involved in a hostage crisis and helped it spiral out of control. Who it's not for: those expecting a narrator to interpret events, since the film leaves viewers alone with the chaotic, unfiltered footage of the time.
