What Gloria Mundi Is About
Daniel comes out of prison and returns to Marseille, where his daughter Mathilda has just given birth. Her partner Nicolas drives on his own account and is exhausted; Mathilda is a shop assistant on a trial contract. One night taxi drivers beat Nicolas up over unfair competition. That is exactly what Robert Guediguian is describing: precarity makes people fight each other rather than the boss, and those at the bottom hit whoever is just below them. Ariane Ascaride won best actress at Venice for it. The director's habit of working with the same Marseille company makes the film read like a family album too.
