What Go West Is About
Go West is a Marx Brothers comedy that MGM made explicitly to capitalize on the comic Western trend Laurel and Hardy had set with Way Out West (1937), directed by Edward Buzzell and written by Irving Brecher. The Marx Brothers' tenth film, it was considered, along with At the Circus (1939) and The Big Store (1941), a step down from their earlier classics and drew smaller audiences, a commercial decline that contributed to the trio announcing their retirement as a team in 1941. Who it's for: anyone curious about the Marx Brothers' later career and their take on the Western parody format. Who it's not for: viewers seeking the group's brightest, most original period work, since this one was seen at the time and since as a decline.
