What God's Little Acre Is About
A poor cotton farmer in Georgia has been digging up his own land with his sons for years, convinced his grandfather buried gold in it. He has also set one parcel aside for God, with whatever comes out of it going to the church, and since the gold always seems about to appear somewhere else, that parcel keeps moving. Meanwhile the family is coming apart on unemployment, infidelity and drink. Anthony Mann adapted Erskine Caldwell's novel. The book had been prosecuted for obscenity in 1933 and the case collapsed; the film is unusually plain-spoken for its moment too. Robert Ryan, Aldo Ray and Tina Louise play it. It starts like a comedy and ends up hard against southern poverty and closed mills.
